About us

The aims of the Portishead Railway Group are:

To lobby on behalf of the residents of Portishead and the communities bordering the A369 for the re-establishment of a Passenger Rail service from Portishead to Bristol. To promote an awareness of the heritage of the Portishead railway.

We believe that there is a very strong case for reopening the branch line. The group was formed by merging two groups - the Portishead Railway Action Group (formed April 2000) and the Portishead Heritage Rail Project. Both groups were working together towards the same goals, the former on the technical aspects and the latter on educational, heritage and publicity aspects. It was felt that to avoid public confusion over the two groups, a merger was desirable.

Regular meetings are held to keep members up to date with progress.

There is another local group - the Gordano Councils Transport Group, which comprises councillors representing the local town and parish councils in the area, and which looks at transport issues in general but particularly supports the reopening of the railway. The Portishead railway Group is represented on this Group.
