Achievements
Since Portishead in Bloom started in 1996 we have achieved a number of highlights
that have improved the look and life in general of Portishead and its residents in
many ways:-
- The “boat” roundabout that welcomes people to Portishead at the end of the Portbury
Hundred.
- The planting of an orchard with old Somerset varieties of apples and pears.
- The planting of a wild flower meadow.
- A complete re-planting of Rodmoor Garden with new roses and complementary plants.
- The setting up of a “Friends of Portishead in Bloom” group that helps with numerous
work parties throughout the town.
- The setting up of a “Pride in Portishead” group that meets once a month to clear
litter in different areas of the town.
- Encouragement of people to take on and plant up an area of otherwise derelict and
weedy piece of ground.
- To encourage local schools to take care of their grounds and gardens, with hands-on
help at Portishead Primary School from committee members.
- To award the John Daws’ cup annually to a person (or persons) who has raised the
prestige of the town.
- The making and putting up of flags in the High Street during the time of the Annual
Carnival.
- Holding an annual Open Gardens Weekend for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors.
- Thousands of bulbs have been planted.
- Encouragement of other community groups to join in with our efforts.
